Newark dispersal order in place after ASB incidents with fireworks overnight

A dispersal order is in place in Newark town centre after a number of antisocial behaviour incidents overnight (Wednesday 4 November).

Nottinghamshire Police received a report of antisocial behavior outside Asda in Lombard Street at around 7.10pm then fireworks were reportedly let off in the market place an hour later. There were also reports of groups of youths causing a nuisance to members of the public.

A 12 hour dispersal order has been authorised and came into effect at 3pm today (Thursday 5 November). It gives police and community support officers the power to direct people, suspected to be involved in crime, nuisance or anti-social behaviour, to leave the town centre for up to 48 hours.

Heather Sutton, District Commander for Newark and Sherwood, said: “We have taken a no tolerance approach to this nuisance behaviour. It’s not acceptable and caused a great deal of stress to innocent members of the public.

“Working with our colleagues at Newark and Sherwood District Council, we have decided a dispersal order is the best approach so we can prevent any further problems tonight and over the weekend if needed.”

“We will be increasing our police patrols, and as we enter the first night of the national lockdown, people may also be issued with a hefty fine as well as being dispersed for their nuisance behaviour.”

Enquiries to identify those involved in the incidents on Wednesday night are ongoing.
