Newark fish and chip shop named among UK’s top 20 takeaways in national awards

A fish and chip shop in Newark has been named among the 20 best takeaways in the UK as it competes for a major national industry award.

Angell’s Fisheries is the only Nottinghamshire business to reach the semi-finals of the Takeaway of the Year category at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2027.

The Newark takeaway has secured its place in the final 20 after judges reduced an original shortlist of 40 businesses from across the country.

The awards, organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), recognise fish and chip businesses for standards of food preparation, customer service, sourcing and industry knowledge.

Angell’s Fisheries will now undergo further assessment as judges select the final 10 businesses competing for the national title.

The next stage will examine several aspects of each takeaway’s operations, including product knowledge, ingredient sourcing, food preparation, hygiene standards and customer service.

The Newark business is one of 14 English takeaways remaining in the competition, alongside four from Scotland and two from Wales.

Two Lincolnshire businesses have also reached the semi-finals: Catch 22 in Tattershall and Linfords Fish and Chips in Market Deeping.

NFFF president Andrew Crook said:

“Whittling down the longlist of 40 to our Takeaway of the Year top 20 has been a very difficult task. Every one of them brings their own unique qualities, strengths and something extra special to the table.

“The judging process is incredibly detailed and appraises every element of what makes an exceptional fish and chip business. To deliver across all these areas to the standard demonstrated by these chippies deserves to be shouted about. They should all be immensely proud of what they have achieved and we’re calling on communities to keep supporting small independent businesses.

“All those who make it through each stage of the competition are setting the benchmark for what can be achieved through passion, commitment and the determination to do things to the highest possible standards. They are helping to pass the baton of excellence to the next generation and setting the standard for others to follow.

“Our top 20 are inspiring examples of that in action, and we very much look forward to celebrating their achievements as we progress through the competition and on to the next round.”

The National Fish & Chip Awards are now in their 39th year and include categories recognising takeaways, restaurants, young fish friers, newcomers and sustainable business practices.

The final 10 takeaways will be announced in December 2026, with the overall winner revealed at an awards ceremony at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel in London on 24 February 2027.

The current holder of the Takeaway of the Year title is The Scrap Box in York, which won the award in February 2026.

The NFFF has also published an interactive map showing the locations of all 20 semi-finalists across the UK.
