Newark: Heartbreak as property floods for third time in four months

Properties in Farndon Road on the outskirts of Newark were affected when water from the River Devon.

Resident Lisa Baines reacted to the incident that affected her home:

“When we got up on Wednesday morning, my husband actually went to work because it didn’t look too bad. But within two hours—between 7 and 9 AM—our road had completely filled up. It became clear that flooding was imminent, and we knew it was only a matter of time.

How does it feel when you see the water rising and know what’s coming?

It’s a range of emotions. Disbelief that it’s happening again, especially after being assured that the necessary fixes had been put in place. Then heartbreak, devastation—it’s overwhelming. And eventually, anger. How can we be left to flood again?

It’s so disappointing. We feel completely abandoned, like no one is looking out for us. Nobody seems to truly hear or understand what it’s like. Agencies like the Environmental Agency and the council say all the right things, but ultimately, we’ve now flooded three times since last October. This is despite the property not flooding in over 60 years, ever since the flood defences were installed.

Are you insured?

Yes.

Do you think you’ll be able to get insurance again?

That’s a big question. After the last two floods, we were lucky to still obtain reasonably priced home insurance without much increase. But after this third flood, I’m not so hopeful.”
