Concert-goers and local drivers face increased journey times on roads around Nottingham’s Wollaton Park as the Splendour Festival gets under way this weekend (19-20 July).
National Highways is reminding festival goers that a large improvement scheme is under way along the nearby A52 Derby Road between the Priory and QMC roundabout with a 24/7 one-way system in place.
Significant congestion is likely around the A52 and the diversion route as thousands of festival visitors head to the music event.
The one-way system is in place for eastbound traffic heading towards Nottingham. Westbound traffic can follow the signed diversion route via Dunkirk Island, University Boulevard and Woodside Road.
This is to enable National Highways to carry out a raft of improvements including resurfacing the carriageway which is coming to the end of its life.
Parts of the ageing drainage system will be rebuilt to help tackle issues with flooding and cope with the strain of increased heavy rain and the impact of climate change
There will be a new cycleway and pedestrian footpath – part of National Highway’s commitment to encourage healthy and sustainable travel – bringing safe access to amenities such as Wollaton Park and University of Nottingham, and low carbon commutes to sites such as QMC and the city centre
In addition, ‘keep clear’ marking and additional signage will be introduced to better enable access from local roads and to make directions clearer for all drivers using the stretch of road.
National Highways Project Manager Susan Chambers said: “We would strongly advise people to plan their journeys carefully, allow extra time or look at public transport options during the festival weekend.
“Also ensure both you and your vehicle are ready for travel – pack essentials like water, snacks and a fully charged mobile phone and before setting off carry out a few basic vehicle checks including tyres, fuel, water and lights.”
