Nottingham mill building could be turned into student accommodation

An old mill in Nottingham could be converted into student flats.

The main building on the site, known as Damad House, is a vacant two and three-storey former mill building on the corner of Radford Road and Egypt Road in New Basford.

Developer JGM (Nottingham) Ltd, has proposed to keep most of the former mill and convert it.

However the two-storey and single-storey sections on the eastern side of the site would be demolished to make way for a new build.

Planning documents say: “The entire scheme would provide up to 71 student accommodation units, 136 total bedrooms, in a combination of 11 cluster flats, providing 76 bedspaces, three accessible apartments, and 57 individual studio flats.”

The main building has been vacant since 2018 and has been actively marketed, according to the council, but the single storey units to the rear have seen some use by the family and friends of the occupier.

Documents say no active businesses are willing to take on the units due to their “unsuitability”, while the existing buildings cannot be brought back into use as an employment space “without significant investment in fire separation and protection”.

Planning permission for conversion to residential use was granted back in 2018.

Planning documents add: “Overall, it is considered that the proposed development would provide a range of positive benefits that would represent a significant enhancement when compared with the current site characteristics.”

The developer would have been required to provide a financial contribution of £504,000 – to reduce the impact of the scheme – under what’s known as a Section 106 agreement.

However an independent assessor, appointed by the council, says the scheme would not be financially viable if the developer was to provide the sum.

Nottingham City Council’s Planning Committee will consider the proposals on Wednesday, May 21.

The plans are recommended for approval by officers.
