A man who carried out a series of shop thefts at a Nottingham supermarket has been jailed after being detained by an off-duty police officer.
Sonny Wharmsby, 44, of no fixed address, targeted the Sainsbury’s store on Castle Bridge Road on four occasions, stealing goods worth nearly £300.
On Friday 3 April, shortly before 3 pm, Wharmsby entered the store with a basket, selected items from shelves and went to the self-checkout area, where he appeared to scan the goods before placing them into bags and leaving without paying.

Security staff challenged him as he attempted to leave, at which point he became violent. An off-duty officer, PC Ross Morgan, who was in the store at the time, intervened and assisted staff in restraining Wharmsby until on-duty officers arrived.
Wharmsby was held at the scene for around 15 minutes before being taken into custody. During the incident, PC Morgan sustained an injury to his hand.
Wharmsby later pleaded guilty to four counts of shop theft and to obstructing or resisting a constable in the execution of their duty. He was sentenced to four weeks in prison and ordered to pay compensation.
