The trial, which is set to last two weeks, was implemented at 4:30 pm on Wednesday 30 October.
East Midlands Railway (EMR) is implementing a pilot measure to reduce fare evasion by closing access to platforms via Nottingham Station’s footbridge.
The footbridge connecting Station Street to Queen’s Road is closed to platforms one to six.
However, the right of way connecting the two streets will remain open, and access to the tram will continue. Customers who wish to access platforms one to six will need to use the main entrance of the station.
This change is intended to help EMR combat fare evasion and ensure fair and transparent travel for all passengers.

Access to the tram on Station Street via the footbridge will remain open.
This closure is a result of a series of three recent revenue operations conducted at Nottingham, which revealed the extent of ticketless travel through the station.
Although these operations yielded positive results, they were particularly resource-intensive due to the station’s layout. Consequently, the costs incurred exceeded the revenue generated, making them unsustainable in the long run.

Philippa Cresswell, Customer Service Director at East Midlands Railway, emphasized the importance of ticket purchases for the railway’s successful operation, improvement, and investment security.
She expressed regret that a minority of individuals believe they can travel without paying and have been using the overhead bridge to evade ticket fees.
“We have a responsibility to safeguard revenue, which is ultimately taxpayers’ money and fare-paying customers’ money. Consequently, we have been compelled to take this action to prevent unauthorized access to the platforms via the station’s footbridge.
“The pilot phase will commence this week and customers are advised to extend their travel time when using the station to ensure a safe and secure journey.
“However, the right of way connecting Station Street and Queen’s Road will remain open, as well as access to the tram stop on Station Street.
