Two former Nottingham students have received suspended prison sentences after admitting fraud offences involving attempts to collect foreign currency from Marks and Spencer travel bureau.
Sena Adamah and Ta’Wanna Daley, both now aged 21, were sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday 19 August.
The court heard that foreign currency had been ordered online using bank details obtained from victims.
Adamah twice visited the Marks and Spencer travel bureau in Albert Street, Nottingham, in October 2024.
On the first occasion, he collected €2,120 from the bureau. He returned two days later and attempted to collect $2,940, but the transaction had been flagged as fraudulent and the currency was not handed over.
Daley was involved in a third attempt at the Marks and Spencer travel bureau at Victoria Retail Park. Messages showed she had been offered a 20 per cent share to collect $2,900.
That transaction was also flagged as fraudulent. Police attended the retail park and arrested Daley. Adamah was arrested later.
The pair had met while living in the same student accommodation in Nottingham.
Adamah, of Lindisfarne Gardens, Maidstone, Kent, admitted three counts of fraud by false representation. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work.
Daley, of Oakhill Close, Maple Cross, Rickmansworth, admitted one count of fraud by false representation. She received a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and must complete a rehabilitation activity requirement and 50 hours of unpaid work.
PC Taya Penny, who led the investigation, said Daley gave officers different explanations after her arrest, including that she was collecting the money for her mother, a friend or a holiday.
She added: “Adamah also refused to provide honest answers when questioned but had little option but to admit his guilt when faced with overwhelming evidence. He managed the overall operation and Daley was a willing participant.”
