A Nottingham woman who says she didn’t have much hope of ever losing weight is celebrating after losing more than 5 stone after securing a free place with Slimming World through city-wide healthy lifestyle provider Thriving Nottingham.
Sarah Clarke has also been named ‘Woman of the Year’ by the Slimming World group at Daybrook Baptist Church near Arnold, which she joined via Thriving Nottingham’s Adult Weight Management pathway in June last year.
“I’d gained a lot of weight during lockdown, and after losing my mum, my mother-in-law and my beloved cats, I was in a really low place,” Sarah says.
“Joining Slimming World through Thriving Nottingham has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Before I joined, I’d heard all sorts of things about groups, but the reality couldn’t be more different. I genuinely look forward to going every week, whether I’ve had a loss or not. Our group is so supportive, welcoming and kind, and I love learning new things about food and healthy choices.”
Sarah credits her success to making sustainable swaps rather than drastic changes:
“I choose lower or fat-free food, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, and I still treat myself to a takeaway once a week. You need variety to stick to the plan, and I was determined.”
Like everyone, I’ve had my highs and lows throughout my weight loss journey. There were times when I’d be really hard on myself if I didn’t lose weight or if I’d had a gain. But Slimming World helped me change my mindset. It made me realise it’s my overall journey that matters, not just what happens in one week. Since then, I’ve been much kinder to myself. Today, I feel so much healthier, happier and more confident. I can look in the mirror without feeling embarrassed, and I absolutely love being able to shop for new clothes.”
Kate Hodsman, Adult Healthy Lifestyle Lead at Thriving Nottingham, says support is available for everyone:
“Whether you’re looking for help with nutrition and exercise, a digital weight loss plan, or health coach guidance, we can help you lose weight for free in a way that suits you and your family.”
Sarah’s advice to other Nottingham residents?
“Go for it. Stick to the plan, be kind to yourself, and reward yourself. You’re worth it.”
In addition to Slimming World, Thriving Nottingham also offers funded places on flexible digital weight loss programme gloji, which comes with optional phone or group support; gloji Children & Family to get the whole family moving more and eating better. Kids enjoy regular free active sessions while adults get support from experts to help build a healthier family, and MAN v FAT, where men can lose weight whilst playing football.
