Nottinghamshire County Council has unveiled plans for Nottinghamshire Day 2024, set to celebrate the county’s rich history, heritage, and community spirit on 25 August.
Historical Significance
Nottinghamshire Day, annually celebrated on August 25th, marks the anniversary of the start of the Civil War in 1642, triggered by the raising of the Royal Standard at Nottingham Castle by King Charles I. This day is dedicated to celebrating Nottinghamshire’s history, heritage, and cultural achievements while fostering community engagement and supporting local businesses.
Success of Nottinghamshire Day 2023
The celebrations in 2023 were deemed a success, with a notable increase in visitor engagement. The family day event at Sherwood Forest attracted over 2,000 visitors, doubling the attendance from the previous year. Events included a Civic Reception and a variety of family-friendly activities such as performances, storytelling, dancing, and music, all delivered within a budget of £10,000.

The festivities will kick off with a Civic Reception on Friday, August 23rd, at County Hall, West Bridgford. The reception will include speeches from dignitaries, a flag-raising ceremony, and opportunities for elected members and dignitaries to celebrate the county’s achievements and heritage.
Public Event at Sherwood Forest
The main public event will be held on Sunday, August 25th, at the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, coinciding with the annual Robin Hood Festival. The event will feature:

These activities aim to highlight Nottinghamshire’s rich culture, history, and community spirit. The event will also promote local crafts and produce, further supporting the local economy.
Community Involvement
To ensure broad community involvement, a Task and Finish Group, including partners such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and Newark and Sherwood District Council, is coordinating the 2024 events. A legacy project will feature a collage of images and photographs from the events, representing each district’s unique contributions.
