Over 2,300 motorists caught by West Bridgford mobile speed cameras

Mobile speed cameras in Loughborough Road and Melton Road trapped hundreds of motorists over the past two years.

A Freedom of Information request sent to Nottinghamshire Police by West Bridgford Wire shows figures for 2019 and 2020 up to October.

The camera van parked on Mowbray Gardens verge facing north captured 767 speeding motorists in 2019 and a further 238 in 2020.

The mobile camera facing south parked outside The West Bridgford School on Loughborough Road facing south caught 222 motorists in 2019 and a huge 1,116 in 2020.

This brings the total to 2,343 with potential fines due of £234,300, however all fines have a fixed initial cost of £100 but these costs can vary depending when they are paid and if they are subject to court proceedings.

Any revenue from speeding fines goes to Central Government and not the police.

Rushcliffe Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Craig Berry said:

‘It goes without saying that the faster you drive the bigger the distance it takes you to stop as you have reduced reaction times. Speed contributes to roughly a third of fatal road traffic collisions and locally around 37 people are killed or injured on Nottinghamshire’s roads every week.

‘Add into the mix these locations are restricted 30 miles limits because they are busy residential areas with large primary and senior schools on the door step, and there should be no bigger incentive to drive safely and to the speed limit.

‘Finally we have a responsibility to protect ourselves and the NHS as avoidable injury puts unnecessary burden on the NHS at a time when hospitals are under massive strain due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

‘We will continue to focus on these locations with the road safety camera vans as a means to prevent motorists speeding.’
