After an incredible eight-and-a-half years on patrol, our longest-serving police dog is enjoying a well-earned retirement.
PD Dexter, a Malinois Cross, joined the force in April 2017 following a brief stint as a security dog.
From day one, he formed a close and protective bond with his handler, PC Jonathan Whysall.
Dexter hit the ground running, making an immediate impact in his first few weeks by tracking down a wanted and armed suspect hiding in a building.
He later qualified as a Firearms Support Dog, completing enhanced training to work alongside officers in the most dangerous and challenging situations.
Over the years, Dexter earned a reputation as a fiercely loyal and protective partner who always had his handler’s back.

His notable achievements include tracking and detaining multiple burglars over several miles, and locating weapons that linked a violent street robber to multiple offences.
Thanks to his excellent health and unwavering willingness to work, Dexter served for more than eight-and-a-half years and was the force’s longest-serving general-purpose dog until his retirement in December.
Dexter will now enjoy his retirement in the care of PC Whysall, who has recently licensed with a new dog.
PC Whysall said: “Dexter was an excellent all-round police dog who achieved some outstanding results in his career. He was absolutely dedicated to me and fiercely protective.
“I had complete faith in him and always knew I would come home safely if he was with me.
“Above all, he really loved what he did. He loved coming into work and being with me right up until the end of his service.
“If he could, he’d still be doing the job – but age catches up with us all. It’s only fair that he now has the chance to put his paws up.”
Dexter will also be supported in his retirement by the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals, who will cover his vets’ bills.
