A couple from Nottinghamshire thought to be one of the UK’s longest-married couples have received a telegram from King Charles III and Queen Camilla, as they celebrate their 75th Wedding Anniversary.
It comes 10 years after they received a similar telegram from Queen Elizabeth II.
Stella Walton, 93 met Jan Fejfer, 99 at a dance at Bentinck Miners Welfare dance after Jan came over from Poland to work at Bentinck Pit after fighting in the Second World War.
They were married 75 years ago today at Basford Hall on 19 March 1949, lived in Annesley Woodhouse all their lives and had 5 children. One son and four daughters.
Jan, 99 worked at Bentinck Colliery for almost 40 years and Stella, 93 worked at Pretty Polly. They have 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. They are thought to be one of the only couples in the UK to celebrate ever this milestone.
Speaking on behalf of the family, their grandson, Ashfield District Council leader and Nottinghamshire County Councillor Jason Zadrozny said:
“This is a remarkable feat and we’re so proud of their achievement.
“Not many couples can say they have received a telegram from two different monarchs.
“They are a testament to the family values we all hold dear.
“They have worked hard all their lives and to reach an incredible age together is so humbling for both of them.
“They have long given up ballroom dancing and their allotment but smile together and love being visited by their family and friends.
“Unfortunately, Grandma Stella has spent the last year in a nursing home since breaking her hip in a fall. Grandad is a daily visitor and they are so proud to have received their latest telegram to mark their tremendous milestone.”
