Police issue dispersal order after 200 people gather at street party

Police issued a dispersal order and arrested a suspect following a large gathering in Bulwell over the weekend.

This followed reports of a street party taking place in Lodgewood Close at around 5.50 pm on Saturday (23 May).

Loud music was playing, and around 200 people had gathered in the street when officers arrived at the scene shortly afterwards.

Having spotted some suspicious behaviour, police also detained a suspect and, following searches, recovered a knife and cannabis.

The individual, a 16-year-old boy, was duly arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in public and possessing Class B drugs.

A decision was then taken to put a stop to the street party by issuing a dispersal order, which gave police the power to move people on or face the prospect of arrest.

Officers also received multiple further reports of similar gatherings across Nottingham over the Bank Holiday weekend.

These included a party at the Arboretum on Saturday and a large gathering in the Ilkeston Road area of Radford on Monday (25 May).

Officers attended both incidents and managed to disperse the groups without any further action being needed.

Chief Inspector Kylie Davies, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“We understand that, when the weather is as nice as it has been, people will inevitably want to gather and socialise.

“There is a point, though, where these gatherings can become antisocial, especially when you add things such as loud music, which can disturb and cause concern within the local community.

“A decision was quite rightly taken to issue a dispersal order on Saturday in Lodgewood Close, Bulwell, while our officers also made an arrest after finding and seizing a bladed weapon at the scene, which is clearly unacceptable.”
