Police make 447 arrests in two months under Nottingham city centre operation

Police have made 447 arrests in Nottingham city centre during the first two months of Operation Reclaim.

The operation was launched in May as a partnership response to issues affecting the city centre, including drug dealing, weapons offences, youth anti-social behaviour, retail crime, aggressive begging and illegal e-bikes.

Nottinghamshire Police said officers had seized more than 70 wraps of drugs, including mamba, crack cocaine and heroin, as well as 15 weapons, including knives, and 18 mobile phones.

The force also said city centre offending had fallen compared with the same period last year since the operation began.

Reported shoplifting offences were down by 10 per cent, auto-crime by 12 per cent, business burglary by 21 per cent, possession of an offensive weapon, including knives, by 13 per cent, and robberies by 5 per cent.

City Commander Superintendent Chris Pearson said Operation Reclaim had been set up to address criminality in the city centre.

He said: “Operation Reclaim was set up to turn the tide on criminality in the city centre. I saw, first-hand, the devastating impact that crimes such as the machete incident in Primark and the machete confrontation near Winter Wonderland had on the public.

“Some of our most prolific offenders are now spending time behind bars and some are now on banning orders preventing them from visiting the city again.”

He added: “We will arrest you; we will charge you. We will take away your drugs, your cash, your weapons, your balaclavas and your e-scooters.”
