Police seize 20 illegal bikes and scooters in ASB crackdown

Police targeting antisocial behaviour (ASB) in Kirkby-in-Ashfield have led to the seizure of 15 illegal e-bikes and five e-scooters as neighbourhood officers continue to tackle the problem head-on.

Regular patrols are continuing to be carried out to tackle issue, with riders being stopped and reported for various offences and a number being brought before the courts.

Our officers are proactively targeting people causing problems using off road bikes, including dangerous riding, as part of wider work to prevent and reduce antisocial behaviour in Kirkby through the effective use of a detailed problem management plan.

This comprehensive plan, created at the start of this year, has already had a major contribution towards reducing incidents of antisocial behaviour in Kirkby – amounting to a decrease of 15 percent each month since the plan has been put in place.

As part of the plan, neighbourhood officers have used intelligence resources to identify key offenders, which has highlighted links to specific schools and year groups.

In response, letter drops have been conducted, with individuals being made aware of the potential consequences of their behaviour, as well as correspondence sent home to parents as a preventative measure.

Officers have been maintaining regular contact and reassurance visits with local businesses affected by ASB.

In addition, they have explored the potential use of criminal behaviour orders (CBOs) for those who persist in causing ASB as a longer-term enforcement option.

Positive work by police and partners to tackle ASB and retail crime in the Ashfield district over recent months has included securing closure orders for problem addresses and CBOs being issued to prolific shop thieves to help protect local retailers.

PCSO Keegan Killen, of the Kirkby-in-Ashfield neighbourhood policing team, said: “Tackling ASB and drug dealing are among the current top priorities for our team.

“We’ve had consistent concerns raised by members of the community about the illegal use of e-bikes and e-scooters, including reports of dangerous riding which puts riders in danger themselves as well as putting pedestrians, cyclists and other road users at risk.

“As we’ve shown with our ongoing enforcement activity, we won’t tolerate the illegal use of these vehicles.

“We will continue to use all the resources we have at our disposal to prevent and reduce all forms of ASB.

“We want people to feel safe when they’re out and about and we will take robust action against individuals who cause problems by committing crime and ASB and whose illegal behaviour causes harm and makes people’s lives a misery.”
