A suspect in a fatal stabbing in Newark has been charged – while police have now named the man who died.
Detectives launched a murder investigation after a 40-year-old man was found unresponsive in Castle Gate, Newark.
The victim – who can now be named as James Cook – sustained stab wounds during an assault at 11.53pm on Wednesday (30 April).
Despite the best efforts of emergency services, Mr Cook was pronounced dead at the scene.
Twenty-two-year-old Brandon Byrne was arrested a few hours later and has today (2 May) been charged with Mr Cook’s murder.
Byrne, of Winston Court, Newark, remains in custody and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (3 May).
Detective Inspector Craig Hall, who is leading the investigation, said:
“We have been trying to determine the full circumstances around this tragic incident since it happened but can now confirm we’ve charged a suspect.
“As we make this announcement, our thoughts remain with Mr Cook’s family and friends, who are still trying to process this devastating news.
“They are currently being supported by specially trained officers and have requested privacy at this difficult time.
“As our investigation continues, I would like to thank the investigation team, which includes specialists from across to force.
“They have worked around the clock on this investigation to build up a clearer picture of what happened.”
