Officers have been praised for their bravery and professionalism after entering a burning flat and safely arresting a suspected arsonist.
Police were called to Aberdeen Street, St Ann’s, Nottingham, around 1.15am on Tuesday (18 March) and became concerned for the safety of a man who was inside the property with a knife.
A fire had taken hold inside the home but three response officers courageously entered the block of flats to try and rescue the man.
They also helped other residents to get out of their homes safely and made sure people were accounted for while liaising with the fire service, other officers and the force control room.
Officers were then able to safely detain a suspect as firefighters put out the fire.
A number of residents were evacuated from their homes.
The three police officers required oxygen and attended hospital after suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.
Detectives have now charged Mark Kirkham, aged 39, of Aberdeen Street, with arson with intent to endanger life.
He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (19 March) and was remanded in custody until his next appearance at Nottingham Crown Court on 16 April 2025.
Chief Inspector Arnie Ahmed, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“Officers who initially attended the scene showed immense bravery after being presented with an extremely challenging and dangerous scenario – both for themselves and people living in this neighbourhood.
“They entered the flat through dense smoke and assisted other people living in the block of flats to safety.
“I have no doubt that their dynamic decision making helped to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.
“Fires can have catastrophic consequences and it is thanks to these officers, working with fire service colleagues, that no one suffered serious or lasting injury.”
