Police-style baton seized in Sneinton disturbance

A suspect has been charged after a friction lock baton was retrieved by police.

Officers were called to Sneinton Boulevard, Sneinton, following reports of an ongoing disturbance.

A group of people were reportedly threatened by someone brandishing a police-style extendable baton at around 6.40pm on Sunday (17 September).

Shortly after attending the incident, response officers seized a friction lock baton from the scene and detained a suspect.

A 16-year-old boy was subsequently charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of or provoke unlawful violence.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has since been released on bail to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 27 September 2023.

PC Emma Hopewell-Ward, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “I hope our swift response to this incident and subsequent charge reassures members of the public how seriously we take this type of incident.

“In this instance, we were able to seize a friction lock baton while attending reports of an ongoing disturbance.

“It should also be noted that as well as being illegal to carry in a public setting, this is also one of a number of weapons, including knuckledusters, samurai swords, zombie knives and flick knives, that are also illegal to keep in a private place in the UK, under the Offensive Weapons Act.”
