Over the last year (between 1 January to 15 December) police in Nottinghamshire report an overall 44 per cent increase in recorded vehicle interference crimes, amounting to nearly 600 incidents, with most of our neighbourhood policing areas seeing a rise in this crime type.
Inspector Sam Birch said:
‘We don’t want anyone’s Christmas to be ruined by criminals on the look-out for an easy target so we’re reminding you to ensure nothing is left on show in your car which could tempt criminals. Be sure to keep your vehicle locked too.
“We’re urging people to be vigilant and make it as difficult as possible for criminals to target their vehicles, especially in the run-up to Christmas.
“Having your car broken into and losing your things to thieves can be very distressing, however there are a few simple steps you can take to keep your vehicle, and what’s in it, safe.
“When shopping, you should ensure your vehicle is locked and any valuables left in cars are removed from sight.
“We’re also urging local residents to report any suspicious people or vehicles to us immediately by calling 101. If an incident is in progress call 999.”
Insp Birch added: “Where possible ensure that your vehicle is parked on your driveway or in your garage if you have one. Alternatively, ensure your vehicle is parked in a well-lit, secure area.
“Having an alarm and immobiliser fitted to your vehicle is also an effective way of deterring criminals.”
