Prolific Clifton shoplifter returned to jail after breaching order

A prolific thief has been returned to jail after breaching the terms of a court order banning him from parts of Clifton.

Leigham Myers, aged 34, was made the subject of a Criminal Behaviour Order in May this year after a successful police application to Nottingham Magistrates’ Court.

The order, granted for a period of five years, prevents him from entering a local retail park and several other named businesses. It also banned him from begging anywhere in the local area.

Myers is accused of breaching the order on multiple occasions over the last three weeks – most recently on Tuesday (10 October) when he was arrested on suspicion of stealing frozen meat from a supermarket.

Myers, of Wilkins Gardens, Clifton, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to one count of shop theft and eight counts of breaching a criminal behaviour order.

He was remanded into custody and will be sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on 23 November.

Officers from the City South neighbourhood policing team have recently introduced a new initiative to combat the issue in Clifton which combines high-visibility patrols and covert security.

Patrols by uniformed officers are taking place regularly around hotspots for retail crime to provide reassurance to staff and shoppers.

Inspector Steve Dalby, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Criminal behaviour orders are a very effective way to manage the behaviour of persistent offenders and also to protect local businesses and shopworkers from harm.

“Breaching an order is a serious criminal offence in itself and will often lead offenders straight to prison.

“As we work to target prolific shoplifters across the county, we will be seeking to secure more of these orders in the weeks and months ahead.”
