Three weeks of improvement works to the main bus stop outside the Queen’s Medical Centre started on Monday, 4 November.
As part of a number of ‘pinch point’ schemes under the wider Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), the aim was to support bus journeys across the city along important routes that were known to experience delays.
The works improved the bus stop QM02, on Derby Road, which is situated outside the main entrance of the hospital. The project included:
- Changing the line of the kerb to help buses pull up to the stop, making it easier for passengers to get on and off;
- Providing tactile ‘warning’ paving to help people with visual impairments or blindness navigate and locate the boarding point;
- Addressing the issue of rutting – depressions in the road surface left by bus tyres over time – through the application of a ‘Hardipave’ treatment;
- Pavement resurfacing between the bus stop and the pedestrian crossing.
During these works, there was a pavement closure, and the QM02 bus stop was not in use.
Pedestrians needed to follow a signed diversion route from the QMC roundabout along Derby Road service road or cross at the pedestrian crossing.
A temporary bus stop was provided around 100 metres to the right of the existing stop, and signs were in place for passengers of the following services:
- NCT: 34, 34C, 35, 36, N34
- CT4N: 18, 18a, 18b, 18x, 20, L2
- Trentbarton: Red Arrow, Indigo, I4
There were also lane closures during the second week of the programme, starting on Monday, 11 November, to provide a safe working space for applying the Hardipave surfacing treatment.
