RBC’s Armed Forces Champion reflects on Merchant Navy Day

Councillors and dignitaries from Rushcliffe Borough Council celebrated Merchant Navy Day  honouring the brave men and women who kept our nation supplied in war and peace.

Since 2000, September 3 has been an official day of remembrance to recognise the sacrifices made by seafarers in both World Wars and their continued importance today.

Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Armed Forces Champion Cllr Jonathan Wheeler joined fellow Council dignitaries at Nottinghamshire County Council to fly the Red Ensign flag, marking this commemorative day.

Cllr Wheeler said: “We are proud to continue our support for the Merchant Navy by celebrating this event. Without the incredible sacrifice by so many, people across Britain could have starved to death during the wars. We shall never forget what they did for us.”

Run by The Seafarers’ Charity, this day also highlights the vital role seafarers play in our economy and in supporting the Royal Navy through the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. Find out more at https://www.theseafarerscharity.org
