Rushcliffe man reaches final of Governor of the Year in National School Awards at House of Lords

A governor from Firbeck Academy in Wollaton was a finalist in the Governor of the Year category in the prestigious National School Awards, which took place at the House of Lords in London.

Steve Crawford from East Bridgford served as a governor at the school – which is part of the Nova Education Trust – for 10 years, helping play a part in its transformation. Back in July, the school achieved a ‘Good’ rating following an Ofsted inspection.
Prior to retirement, he worked in the food industry for his entire career. Steve became a governor of Firbeck Academy with encouragement from his employer, Samworth Brothers, who were the original sponsors of this and other academies in the East Midlands.

As Chair of Governors at Firbeck Academy over several years, Steve used his managerial skills in supporting a young school leadership team to transform the school to its ‘Good’ rating.
Ash Rahman, CEO of Nova Education Trust, said: “We are very proud of Steve for reaching the finals of the National School Awards.
“Steve is a tremendous advocate of the local community, the essence of the school and supporting the broader development of each and every child.
“His experience and advice has been a massive part of the improvements made at this school over the past decade, and his commitment as a volunteer has been phenomenal”
Emma Knights, from the National Governance Association, presented the governors award and said that are over a quarter of a million governors across the UK who are all unpaid volunteers.
Steve said: “It was a surprise for me to learn not only that I’d been nominated by the Trust, but also reached the shortlist.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being a governor but it is quite nice to be recognised by those that you work with.
“The event at the House of Lords really was quite special.”
