The site near Cotgrave was awarded platinum status, the highest level of recognition within the Standard, for demonstrating outstanding environmental performance.

The Greener Globe Funeral Standard is an independent sustainability audit scheme created specifically for the funeral sector that assesses against four levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with platinum awarded for an audit score of 80% or above.

The result recognises Rushcliffe Oaks’ commitment to sustainability across its operations, from energy use and cremation technology to grounds management, purchasing, waste reduction and day-to-day working practices as one of the Midlands’ greenest crematorium.

Rushcliffe Oaks operates an innovative all-electric cremator which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 85% compared with a traditional gas-powered cremator and the facility is supplied through a renewable electricity tariff and incorporates solar panels, energy-efficient lighting and a living roof.

Environmental care also extends into the grounds, where habitat creation, native planting and wildlife-friendly management support local biodiversity.

These measures sit alongside practical policies for responsible purchasing, reducing waste, monitoring performance and continually improving the service’s environmental impact.

RBC’s Deputy Leader Cllr Abby Brennan said: “Winning this award is a fantastic achievement and highlights the success of our Rushcliffe Oaks site in remaining environmentally conscious whilst delivering compassionate, high-quality services for bereaved families.

“Sustainability has been built into the core of the crematorium from day one and this award recognises how well this has been achieved through measurable actions each day.

“As always, we will continue to review the facility’s performance and seek further opportunities to reduce its environmental impact while maintaining the highest standards of care for bereaved families and the community.
