Shoplifting pair caught on Boxing Day

A shoplifting duo behind a stealing spree in the lead up to Christmas have been jailed.

David Hewitt and Kyle Goodman teamed up to try and steal on four separate occasions.

The duo helped themselves to various items from the shelves at three Nottinghamshire stores.

Each time saw Hewitt and Goodman brazenly walk into the shops, pocket items and then leave.

Laundry products, cheese and chocolates were all taken by the pair during three trips to the shops on 20, 22 and 23 December.

Hewitt and Goodman targeted Hucknall’s B&M, before then stealing from the Chapel Street-based B&M twice after that.

Having managed to avoid getting caught three times, the duo’s luck ran out on Boxing Day when they visited a shop in Bestwood.

On this occasion, neither Hewitt, 46, or Goodman, 26, were able to leave Co-Op, in Beckhampton Road, with their stolen goods.

That’s after they were stopped at the exit by security staff, with response officers then arriving soon after to arrest them.

Both men attended Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday (29 December), where they each pleaded guilty to four counts of shop theft.

Hewitt, of Linby Road, Hucknall, and Goodman, of Abercarn Close, Bulwell, were sentenced to six months in prison apiece.

Sergeant Louise Ellis, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Shoplifting isn’t a victimless crime but can actually be really damaging to communities and directly impact on people’s livelihoods.

“Repeatedly stealing from the shelves like these two men did is also incredibly unfair on honest shoppers who spend their hard-earned money.

“Having worked together to shoplift three times in the run up to Christmas, Hewitt and Goodman’s luck ran out when they tried to do it again on Boxing Day.

“It was pleasing to hear they’ve both now received custodial sentences, which should provide a strong deterrent to fellow thieves as we start the New Year.”
