Police negotiators spent several hours talking a distressed man down from the roof of a house.
Armed officers attended an address in Queen Street, Southwell, shortly before 12pm yesterday (Friday 16 January) after concerns for the man’s safety and reports of damage being caused at the address.
Police spent the next few hours speaking to the man and trying to resolve the situation. Roads were closed and the area was cordoned off while the incident was dealt with.
Four local schools implemented a precautionary lockdown while police ensured the area was safe. These lockdowns were later lifted.
The incident was safely resolved shortly before 6pm yesterday and roads were re-opened.
A 50-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray, criminal damage, and recall to prison.
Chief Superintendent Nick Waldram, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a challenging situation for all the officers involved, and it is thanks to their training and professionalism that it was safely concluded without anyone coming to harm.
“Keeping people safe is always our number one priority. Although this was an isolated incident, with no wider risk to the public or any school pupils, we recognise that incidents of this nature can be unsettling for families and the wider community and we will continue to have police patrols in the area to reassure people.
“The initial unconfirmed report suggested an individual might be in possession of a weapon and therefore armed officers were initially deployed as a precaution.
“They were stood down when no weapon was found on the person or within the property.
“Local neighbourhood policing team officers will continue to work with the schools over the coming days to answer any questions they may have.
“As our investigation into what happened continues, I would like to thank people living nearby for their patience and understanding during this prolonged police deployment.”
