Tamizh Thinnai: Nurturing culture and unity through dance in Nottingham

Tamizh Thinnai, a vibrant community-based organisation, is passionately dedicated to bringing the Indian diaspora in Nottingham closer together through an array of enriching events and cultural initiatives.

Central to its mission is the Tamizh Thinnai Dance School, which was established with the vision of uniting children under one roof to cultivate and hone their dance skills while embracing diverse traditions.

The journey began with a six-week free workshop of Oyilattam, a traditional Tamil folk dance, offering children an opportunity to connect with their roots.

Following the resounding success of this initiative, Tamizh Thinnai expanded its repertoire, introducing Bollywood dance and Dandiya sessions, providing a variety of dance forms for children to explore. These experiences allow the younger generation to savour the richness of various dance traditions, fostering both cultural awareness and artistic expression.

Tamizh Thinnai also prioritises creating platforms where children can showcase their talents with pride and confidence. A recent highlight was the spirited display of Dandiya at the Sri Thurkkai Amman Temple in Beeston and the Hindu Temple in Carlton, where the children’s performances captivated the audience and demonstrated the fruits of their hard work and dedication.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated dance instructor, Anisha Sundaram, whose guidance and expertise have been instrumental in nurturing these young talents. A special note of appreciation also goes to the parents, whose unwavering support has encouraged Tamizh Thinnai to continue striving for excellence on behalf of the community’s children.

“It is with immense pride and honour that we serve the children of this community, providing them with opportunities to grow, learn, and shine through the universal language of dance.”
