Two arrests after McDonald’s drive-thru laughing gas incident

Two suspects were arrested for a catalogue of offences following reports of drug-taking inside a car.

Newark officers attended McDonald’s in Lincoln Road after hearing people were inhaling laughing gas at the drive-thru.

The response team arrived at 12.40am on Friday (19 December) to find a car matching the one described heading for the exit.

Believing it could be involved in criminality, the officers decided to pull over the vehicle – which was found to contain two people.

Numerous nitrous oxide cannisters, as well as quantities of cannabis were found inside the vehicle, which police suspected to be stolen.

Based on these suspicions, the car’s occupants – a 19-year-old man and a 21-year-old man – were both arrested for a multitude of offences.

An officer was then headbutted after the suspects were brought into custody too.

Both suspects were arrested for theft of a motor vehicle, possessing nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, and possessing Class B drugs.

The 19-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and other driving offences, while the 21-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker too.

Inspector Charlotte Ellam, District Commander for Newark and Sherwood, said:

“The officers involved in this incident deserve great credit for their swift response and the professionalism shown throughout.

“Having received reports of drug activity inside a car, the officers were there within a few minutes and brought a vehicle suspected of being involved to a stop.

“That awareness ultimately resulted in nitrous oxide and cannabis being identified onboard and seized, while two suspects were arrested for numerous offences.

“Those included theft of a motor vehicle and several relating to drug activity – the last of which has been one of our neighbourhood policing priorities in Newark and Sherwood for some time now.

“We hope news of these rapid arrests will provide some reassurance to the public and further illustrate that we will not tolerate this type of behaviour and will look to take action.”
