Two charged over series of cash machine thefts

Police investigating an extensive series of attacks on cash machines have charged two men with a string of offences.

Nottinghamshire Police launched an investigation after cash-trapping devices were fitted to ATMs in Sneinton Dale and Bramcote and other parts of the UK including Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire and Scotland.

Many thousands of pounds were stolen following the tampering incidents, which took place between May and July 2023.

Two men were arrested after a warrant was executed by Nottinghamshire Police officers at an address in Barnsley on Wednesday morning (2 August).

Felix Urcaciu, aged 31, of Fostergate, Selby, North Yorkshire, has been charged with conspiring to steal from another; possession of criminal property; and concealing,  disguising and / or converting and transferring and / or removing criminal property.

Cristian Urcaciu, aged 34, of Upper Sheffield Road, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, has been charged with conspiring to steal from another and concealing / disguising/converting / transferring/removing criminal property.

The pair appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday 4 August and were granted conditional bail. They are next due to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 1 September 2023.

Police Staff Investigator Jodie Ridgewell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “ATM crime is not victimless – it has an effect on individuals and is costly to banks and cash machine operators that end up having to reimburse victims.

“I am pleased we have now been able to charge two suspects and our investigation continues.”
