Newly reported figures of tests conducted, cases and deaths for Northern Ireland cover a 4-day period, and for Wales cover a 2-day period.

Newly reported figures for cases in Scotland are only available at national level.

Data for deaths in Scotland have not been updated. The UK total therefore includes only newly reported deaths in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Figures for cases and deaths by specimen date and date of death have been updated for England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Cases

A confirmed case is someone who has tested positive for coronavirus.

218,724 new people had a confirmed positive test result reported on 4 January 2022.

Between 29 December 2021 and 4 January 2022, 1,269,878 people had a confirmed positive test result. This shows an increase of 50.9% compared to the previous 7 days.

Vaccinations

Vaccines are currently given in 3 doses.

51,820,652 people had been given a first dose by the end of 3 January 2022.

47,482,789 people had been given a second dose by the end of 3 January 2022.

34,363,986 people had been given a booster or third dose by the end of 3 January 2022.

Healthcare

Some people with coronavirus have to go into hospital.

1,924 people with coronavirus went into hospital on 27 December 2021.

Between 21 December 2021 and 27 December 2021, 9,958 went into hospital with coronavirus. This shows an increase of 50.1% compared to the previous 7 days.

There were 14,126 patients in hospital with coronavirus on 31 December 2021.

Some people in the hospital need to use a special device called a mechanical ventilator to help them breathe.

There were 883 coronavirus patients in hospital beds with a mechanical ventilator on 31 December 2021.

Deaths

There were 48 deaths within 28 days of a positive test for coronavirus reported on 4 January 2022.

Between 29 December 2021 and 4 January 2022, there have been 909 deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test. This shows an increase of 51.8% compared to the previous 7 days.
