DATA NOTES

Deaths by publish date for England include backlog

Today’s death figures include a backlog of hospital deaths reported overnight by NHS England covering the period 1st⁠–4th January.

Local vaccinations data delayed in England

Because of a delay in receiving data, vaccinations figures (including age breakdowns) for English regions, local authorities and MSOAs have not been updated.

Weekly deaths with COVID-19 on the death certificate only include data from England and Wales

Deaths with COVID-19 on the death certificate registered in the week ending 24 December 2021 are only available for England and Wales. The UK total number includes England and Wales only.

There were 2,050,101 tests reported on 4 January 2022. This shows an increase of 7.0%compared to the previous 7 days.

Between 29 December 2021 and 4 January 2022, there have been 10,829,388 tests.

Cases

A confirmed case is someone who has tested positive for coronavirus.

194,747 new people had a confirmed positive test result reported on 5 January 2022.

Between 30 December 2021 and 5 January 2022, 1,281,588 people had a confirmed positive test result. This shows an increase of 40.1% compared to the previous 7 days.

Vaccinations

Vaccines are currently given in 3 doses.

51,845,518 people had been given a first dose by the end of 4 January 2022.

47,523,676 people had been given a second dose by the end of 4 January 2022.

34,586,810 people had been given a booster or third dose by the end of 4 January 2022.

Healthcare

Some people with coronavirus have to go into hospital.

2,258 people with coronavirus went into hospital on 28 December 2021.

Between 22 December 2021 and 28 December 2021, 11,005 went into hospital with coronavirus. This shows an increase of 58.5% compared to the previous 7 days.

There were 17,276 patients in hospital with coronavirus on 4 January 2022.

Some people in the hospital need to use a special device called a mechanical ventilator to help them breathe.

There were 911 coronavirus patients in hospital beds with a mechanical ventilator on 4 January 2022.

Deaths

There were 334 deaths within 28 days of a positive test for coronavirus reported on 5 January 2022.

Between 30 December 2021 and 5 January 2022, there have been 1,195 deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test. This shows an increase of 131.6% compared to the previous 7 days.
