Updates: M1 southbound closed in both directions – collision between pedestrian and vehicle

The M1 in Leicestershire is closed in both directions between J22 (Markfield) and J21A (Leicester/A46) due to a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Emergency services including Leicestershire Police are in attendance. National Highways are also on scene to assist with traffic management.

Diversion Route

Road users travelling southbound are advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Leave the M1 southbound at J22 and at the roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A50.
  • Follow the A50 eastbound to the A50/A46 interchange and at the roundabout take the 4th exit onto the A46.
  • Continue on the A46 back to M1 J21A and merge with the M1 southbound to continue your journey.

Road users travelling northbound are advised to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Leave the M1 northbound at J21A and join the A46.
  • Follow the A46 to the A46/A50 interchange and at the roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A50.
  • Continue on the A50 back to the M1 J22 and at the roundabout take the 4th exit onto the M1 northbound to continue your journey.

There are currently 30 min delays above normal travel time on approach to the southbound closure with 2.5 miles of congestion. There is 1 mile of congestion on approach northbound causing 20 min delays above normal travel time.

AA reports:

‘Road closed and queueing traffic due to serious crash on M1 both ways between J22 A50 (Coalville / Ashby-De-La-Zouch) and J21A A46 (Leicester North / Kirby Muxloe). The southbound side was closed at around 19:00 but the closure has now been extended to both sides.’
