Victim has leg amputated after machete attack inside car

A man had to have his leg amputated after being attacked by a knife-carrier inside a car.

The victim had been out celebrating a friend’s birthday when they were both offered a lift outside a Lenton pub.

Unbeknownst to either of them, one of the vehicle’s occupants – Mason Knight – had a machete in his possession.

Within seconds of the pick-up and with the car still moving, Knight pulled out the weapon and stabbed the man with it.

One of the two stab wounds to his leg was so severe that he was left fighting for his life in the aftermath of the attack on 26 April this year.

After stealing jewellery belonging to the two men, Knight allowed both to get out the car in Grassington Road, Bobbers Mill.

Police attended a few minutes later and used a tourniquet at the roadside to stop the bleeding until further help and paramedics arrived.

Despite further treatment in hospital, the injury was so severe that the man had to have part of his left leg amputated.

Knight, meanwhile, was identified and arrested by police officers on the day of the assault.

He would go on to be charged with wounding with intent, two counts of theft, and possessing a knife in a public place.

Having admitted to each of them, Knight was told he’d be sentenced for his crimes at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday (26 August).

Before sentencing was passed, a powerful impact statement was presented to the judge from the victim about how the attack had changed his life.

It said:

“The incident has affected me massively. I literally cannot do anything, and I feel trapped every day.

“This injury has changed my life forever. It has changed every single possible aspect of my life and had a huge impact on my partner and child. None of our lives will ever be the same.

“That fact that this was not an accident makes all this worse and much harder to process. This happened as a direct result of the deliberate and unnecessary actions of Mason Knight.

“He is absolutely and solely to blame for this and the consequences I will suffer from for the rest of my life. I can’t ever be the same.”

Knight, of Chesil Avenue, Nottingham, was handed a total extended custodial sentence of 19 years.

He was sentenced to 14 years behind bars as part of this and will then spend an additional five years on licence when he’s eventually released.

Detective Constable Megan Guy, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“As the judge rightly said through his words and the length of the sentence he passed, Mason Knight is a dangerous man who belongs behind bars.

“Seemingly without any care for the consequences of his actions and with no provocation whatsoever, he pulled out a weapon and used it.

“His mindless and reckless decision to do what he did left another man with devastating injuries he will now have to live with forever.

“Had the officers not arrived on the scene so quickly, there’s a good chance the victim could’ve lost his life, and Knight would now be facing an even more serious charge.

“Thankfully for everybody involved, that was not the case.

“While no punishment will ever make up for what Knight did, we hope the sentence passed will provide some small degree of respite to the victim going forward.”
