Warning after car overturns near River Trent

The occupants of a car had a lucky escape during a suspected drink-driving incident.

That’s after their vehicle flipped over and became lodged between a barrier and a wall next to a river.

Officers were called to Queens Drive, Nottingham, following reports a vehicle had collided with a lamppost.

The car in question reportedly lost control near the junction with Tottle Road, just before 6am on New Year’s Day.

It then hit a lamppost, flipped over and hit a brick wall next to the River Trent, where it came to a stop on its side.

One of the vehicle’s six occupants – who all denied being the driver – later received hospital treatment for an injury to her neck.

Suspecting they could be under the influence of alcohol, all six were breathalysed at the roadside by police and provided blood samples.

Four men – aged 27, 30, 26 and 23 – and two women – aged 23 and 24 – were all subsequently arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Sergeant Adam Green, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Looking at the image of the car following this collision, it’s clear all those onboard were lucky to not have been seriously injured.

“After losing control and hitting a lamppost, the vehicle flipped onto its side and became lodged between a barrier and a wall right next to the River Trent.

“We’re still in the process of investigating exactly what happened here, but we strongly suspect whoever was driving this car was over the limit at the time.

“That decision to get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs puts all those on the roads at risk.

“Drink and drug-driving are incredibly serious offences, for the simple reason that they can lead to the worst consequences imaginable.

“We’ve arrested six suspects in connection with this incident but our inquiries are still ongoing, so we’d ask anyone who saw what happened to get in touch with us.

“We also want to hear from anyone who inadvertently recorded any dash-cam footage of the incident too.”

Information can be reported to the police on 101, quoting incident 262 of 1 January 2026, while Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously too on 0800 555 111.
