West Bridgford opticians steps in to help 92-year-old Radcliffe man

When 92-year-old Mr Malvern Akers broke his glasses, he feared that he wouldn’t be able to see while in lockdown, but fortunately, the team at a West Bridgford opticians came to his rescue.

Mr Ackers, from Radcliffe-on-Trent, is unable to leave his home during the current restrictions, so when his specs broke, he called his local Specsavers store in West Bridgford to see what he should do.

The store’s contact lens manager, Lisa Buckberry, told Mr Ackers not to worry and that they could offer him emergency assistance. Lisa then drove to Mr Ackers’ house, picked up his specs and took them back to the store to fix them. Once repaired she returned them to him (sanitised) at his house so he could see comfortably again.

‘We were delighted to be able to safely help Mr Ackers out during this challenging situation,’ comments Specsavers West Bridgford store director, Stephen Rogers. ‘We’ve had to suspend all routine testing to focus on essential and emergency care only – to help people like Mr Ackers and key workers out.’

Specsavers’ teams are classed as key workers to provide urgent and essential eye care to those who need it. This includes supporting other key workers who couldn’t function without their help and people who would come to harm without their health expertise, especially where the usual hospital services and NHS facilities are being prioritised for the fight against COVID-19.
