Wilford Lane section to get fully resurfaced in £3.3m investment

The resurfacing works will be included in the council’s capital programme for the 2025/26 financial year.

West Bridgford will benefit from a significant investment in road resurfacing as part of a £3.3 million boost to Nottinghamshire’s highways, announced by the Leader of the Council, Cllr Sam Smith, at the Full Council meeting on Thursday, 27 February.

Following strong lobbying from local County Councillor Gordon Wheeler, alongside Borough Councillor Hari Om, a key section of Wilford Lane has been added to the capital programme for full resurfacing.

The investment is part of the Conservative administration’s commitment to delivering permanent repairs to roads, with the record investment they have put into highways to combat the effects of the terrible winter weather and construction traffic.

Cllr Sam Smith, Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said:

“We Conservatives have always said that investing in Nottinghamshire’s roads is a top priority because we know it’s what residents want.

“That’s why I’m pleased to confirm that an extra £3.3 million is being allocated to resurfacing key roads across the county, including Wilford Lane, West Bridgford. This investment will ensure proper, lasting repairs rather than just patching up potholes.

“There’s more to come too, as I will announce additional resurfacing projects for West Bridgford and Rushcliffe at the March Full Council meeting.”

County Councillor for West Bridgford West, Cllr Gordon Wheeler, welcomed the news, adding:

“I know how frustrating poor road conditions can be for residents and businesses alike, which is why I have been pushing hard for this part of Wilford Lane in West Bridgford to be resurfaced.

“I’m thrilled that this has been approved as part of the capital programme to be fully resurfaced. It is just a shame that the Labour Group and Independent Group voted against this extra funding for roads at the Full Council meeting, as Wilford Lane would have missed out if they had been successful in voting the proposal down.”

Cllr Hari Om, Borough Councillor for Rushcliffe, also welcomed the announcement:

“This is a big step forward and goes along with the huge amount of resurfacing we have seen in recent years to catch up on low investment during the Labour administration. Further investment in our highways to keep West Bridgford moving safely and smoothly is needed, and I am glad to hear another £70 million of funding will be announced in March. Well-maintained roads are essential for residents, businesses, and emergency services alike, and I’ll keep pushing to ensure our community gets the infrastructure it deserves.

“The Conservative-led County Council is doing its part, but the Labour Mayor now needs to come up with the rest of the funding promised by the government as part of the Devolution deal secured by the Conservatives.”

The resurfacing works will be included in the council’s capital programme for the 2025/26 financial year, which will be officially signed off in March by the Cabinet Member for Transport and the Environment and is expected to be worth over £70 million.

Further updates on additional road improvements will be announced at the Full Council meeting in March.
