A woman has died after a collision involving a pedestrian and at least one vehicle on the A1 in Lincolnshire.
Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway at South Witham at 9.35pm on Saturday 9 May 2026 after reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a grey Seat Leon.
The incident happened north of the junction for South Witham and Castle Bytham.
Despite the efforts of police officers and paramedics, a 52-year-old woman died at the scene. A large dog also died.
The woman’s family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers.
Lincolnshire Police said it is understood the woman, a man and their dog had left a Vauxhall Corsa parked in a layby north of the Fox Inn on the southbound side of the A1 before walking over to the northbound carriageway.
Officers are working to establish when, and for how long, they had been on the northbound side of the road.
Police are appealing for anyone who was travelling either northbound or southbound on the A1 at South Witham between 3:40 pm and 9:35 pm to come forward if they saw anything that may assist the investigation.
They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw a broken-down black Vauxhall Corsa in a layby on the southbound carriageway near the Fox Inn, or any pedestrians with a dog in the area during that period.
Drivers who travelled through the area are also being asked to check dashcam footage.
The collision happened near several businesses, including Trophy’s Cars, OK Diner and Travelodge. There is also a truck stop on the southbound carriageway near the Fox Inn. The What3Words location for the collision is remainder.rafters.affords.
Two men have been arrested in connection with the investigation. A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, while a 58-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Both remained in custody at the time of the police appeal.
Lincolnshire Police said the investigation remains active and asked people not to speculate about the circumstances.
Anyone with information, dashcam footage, or who recalls seeing anything relevant, is asked to contact the investigating officer by emailing SCIUinvestigators@lincs.police.uk.
