Live updates: M1 closed northbound J21A lorry fire and a second serious incident

The northbound M1 is closed after a lorry fire, a second incident requiring air ambulance attendance then happened.

The HGV fire and collision on the M1 in Leicestershire northbound between J21 (M69) & J22 (Markfield) have now concluded.

The M1 remains closed northbound for planned overnight roadworks between J21A and J22.

The M1 in Leicestershire is closed northbound between J21 (M69) and J22 (Markfield) and southbound between J22 and J21a (Leicester) due to two separate incidents:

A lorry fire between J21a and J22 and a serious collision between J21 and J21a, just prior to the J21a exit slip road.

All emergency services are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also providing assistance with traffic management.

Diversion Routes

Northbound diverted traffic should follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol:

  • Exit the M1 northbound at Junction 21 and take the third exit from the junction onto the A5460 eastbound.
  • Continue east along the A5630 for approximately 0.5 km and take the first exit north onto the A563 slip road to the A563 Lubbesthorpe Way/Meridian Roundabout.
  • Then take the third exit from the roundabout northbound onto A563 Lubbesthorpe Way.
  • Continue north on the A563 passing through the A563/A47 Hinckley Road, A563 Scudamore Road Roundabouts, Park View junction, Glenfield Roundabout, Aikman Road and Dillon Way junctions to the A563/A59 Groby Road Roundabout.
  • At the roundabout take the first exit (left) onto the A50 westbound.
  • Continue westbound on the A50 passing through the A50 Station Road Roundabout to the A50/A46 Interchange.
  • At the Interchange take the second exit and continue along the A50 passing through the Lena Drive junction, Bradgate Hill and Fieldhead Roundabouts to A50/M1 Junction 22 Interchange
  • At the Interchange take the fourth exit and rejoin the M1 northbound

Southbound diverted traffic is advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol:

  • Exit the M1 southbound at Junction 22 and take the first exit (left) onto the A50.
  • Continue along the A50 eastbound passing through the Fieldhead and Bradgate Hill roundabouts and Lena Drive junction to the A50/A46 Interchange.
  • At the interchange take the fourth exit south onto the A46.
  • Continue southbound on the A46 to Junction 21a and merge back onto the M1 southbound.

The M1 has been closed northbound because of a lorry fire, a second incident then occurred at the J21 slip.

National Highways said at 1:58 pm Saturday 14 October:

‘The M1 in Leicestershire is now CLOSED northbound between J21 (M69) and J22 (Markfield) due to TWO separate incidents:

‘A lorry fire between J21a & J22 and a serious collision between J21 & J21a, just prior to the J21a exit slip road. –

‘Thanks for your patience if you’re stuck.’

The M1 in Leicestershire is closed in both directions between J21a (Leicester) and J22 (Markfield) due to a lorry fire.

Emergency services including Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also providing assistance with traffic management.

Northbound diverted traffic is advised to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol:

  • Exit the M1 northbound at Junction 21a using the free flow lane to join the A46 northbound.
  • Continue northbound along the A46 to the A46/A50 Interchange.
  • At the Interchange take the first exit (left) onto the A50 Markfield Road.
  • Continue along the A50 passing through the Lena Drive junction, Bradgate Hill and Fieldhead Roundabouts to A50/M1 Junction 22 Interchange.
  • At the Interchange take the fourth exit and rejoin the M1 northbound.

Southbound diverted traffic is advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol:

  • Exit the M1 southbound at Junction 22 and take the first exit (left) onto the A50.
  • Continue along the A50 eastbound passing through the Fieldhead and Bradgate Hill roundabouts and Lena Drive junction to the A50/A46 Interchange.
  • At the interchange take the fourth exit south onto the A46.
  • Continue southbound on the A46 to Junction 21a and merge back onto the M1 southbound.
