122 arrested after police increased patrols in Old Market Square

On November 19, Nottinghamshire Police made a commitment to the public that high-visibility patrols would be deployed across the city including Old Market Square.

This was following a machete confrontation between two groups on bikes, where eight people were arrested in connection with the incident.

All remain on strict bail conditions while a full investigation is underway.

Since November 19th, officers have now made 122 arrests around the Old Market Square area with 27 young people on conditions not to enter the city centre.

Assistant Chief Constable Suk Verma said:

“Officers executed a number of warrants at addresses on Wednesday in relation to a suspected drug dealing operation.

“As part of our investigation, we also attended a storage unit in the Radford area where we discovered more than 100 knives. These are some of the most dangerous knives we have come across and if ever used would likely cause catastrophic injuries or even death.

“We are in the early stages of the investigation to find out why so many knives were stored at this location but for now we have taken these dangerous weapons off the streets of the city and prevented them causing anyone harm.

“We have also charged two people with a number of offences.

“We are also continuing our efforts to drive out anyone who comes into the city to commit crime or cause any type of disorder.

“Last week, we reported that 19 people have been banned from the city centre due to their behaviour. This week, the number has gone up to 27.

“I made a personal commitment that we will make life as hostile as possible for criminals and take away every opportunity we can for them to be in our city centre.

“As we have said before, this is not just a police issue. Everyone has a part to play including parents and guardians when it comes to youth crime and youth violence. However, we will continue to do our part and ensure those who cause the most harm to our city are not allowed back in this Christmas.”
