Over 2,500 people have already signed a petition calling on the Labour Government to do a u-turn on their proposals which should see most of Rushcliffe join an expanded Nottingham City Council.
The shock announcement on the 16th July from the Government saw an option many feel as politically gerrymandering, delivering the city council more properties and therefore council tax, along with land to build even more houses on.
Cllr Mike Adams, Leader of the Gedling Borough Conservative Group said it is clear by the initial success that the Government must listen: ‘The people have spoken, and they are telling Andy Burnham and co. they do not want to be forced into Nottingham City Council against their will, it’s time for the Government to admit their mistake and scrap the plans.’
Cllr Jonathan Wheeler, Chairman of Rushcliffe Conservatives, agreed and said: ‘We must think of the staff members affected by the changes, for a party which claims to be for the workers, Labour are badly letting down hundreds of loyal council officers and staff members who look after our key services. Teams facing being split, some people could lose their jobs and that is unacceptable. It is time for all political parties and MPs to back our petition and stand up against this Government.’
