Almost 7,500 people have now signed a petition calling for the Government to ensure Rushcliffe is not moved into a new Nottingham City Council as part of Local Government Reorganisation.
Under plans announced by the Government just before Christmas, the Government wants to abolish borough and district councils and create a new unitary council which would replace city and county councils.
The government has set a target for each new council to have at least 500,000 people, meaning the existing Nottingham City Council would need to expand, putting Rushcliffe at risk.
Cllr Debbie Soloman, Chairman of Rushcliffe Conservatives, says the number of people who have already signed shows the strength of feeling in the community
“We have people signing every day, online and on paper copies, people from all political backgrounds, including supporters of other parties and two independent councillors. The thought of Rushcliffe joining Nottingham City is a terrifying prospect given their poor track record. Rushcliffe has the lowest council tax in Nottinghamshire, is debt free and continues to invest in services.
“If the Government forces Rushcliffe to go, we must remain within a new County Council and not be forced in with the existing City Council. We have spoken with the Leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council and the Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council to share the views of residents, and they both agree that every effort needs to be made to keep Rushcliffe out of Nottingham City.
“We have not heard what the views of the Rushcliffe MP James Naish are, but we have written to him as well, so he understands the views or residents.”
