Rededication service for Worksop War Memorial

A short service led by the Reverend Nigel Stones, Idle & Sands Benefice, and Chaplain to the Worksop Branch of the Royal British Legion, was held in Worksop on Sunday 16 August 2026) to rededicate the war memorial.

This follows the addition of a plaque to the memorial, remembering Sergeant Wayne Rees from Worksop, who was killed in Iraq in January 2007 whilst serving with The Queen’s Royal Lancers.

Attending the service alongside Sergeant Rees’s family were veterans, civic dignitaries and Deputy Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Hile DL. A tribute to Wayne Rees was delivered by Captain Ange Lansberry, RCMO, The Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeth’s Own).

Cllr Sybil Fielding, Chair of Bassetlaw District Council and Armed Forces Champion, said:

“It was an honour to attend today’s service and lay a wreath to remember and commemorate Sgt Rees. The addition of any new names to the war memorial always brings profound sadness, but it is vital that we remember, recognise and never forget those from our communities who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Len Rubie, Chair of the Worksop Branch of the Royal British Legion, said:

“Today was about honouring and commemorating Wayne and his family. I knew Wayne, and like many in our local Armed Forces community, events like today hit quite hard. Wayne’s plaque is now on the memorial, and in November, on Remembrance Sunday, when we march past, his name will be there amongst our fallen heroes.”
