The Midland & East Coast section of one of Britain’s biggest trade unions, the GMB, has called on its local branches and members to reach out to local foodbanks at this time of crisis.
The GMB represents over 600,000 working people across the country and has been leading calls for more protections for people at work throughout the Coronavirus outbreak.
Local Nottingham GMB Union members today made a delivery of urgently needed items to the St Anne’s Advice Centre foodbank in Nottingham.
The demand on foodbanks in Nottingham is increasing, whilst efforts to curb the spread of Coronairus has meant many people are unable to make their regular donations. Many foodbanks in the Nottingham area are now operating a safe distance drop off system, along with calls for online financial donations.
GMB Midland & East Coast Regional Secretary, Martin Allen, said:
“The GMB is a no-nonsense, modern Union that will always adapt to the times. We will always keep one step ahead of bad employers to better fight for our members. We are also a Union that reflects the best traditions of the trade union movement, solidarity, mutual respect and community spirit. That’s why we’re also asking all branches to reach out to those in need in their community at this uncertain time”.
