Jail for Nottingham man who tampered with a cash machine

A 43-year-old man has been jailed after he admitted placing a fraudulent device on a cash machine.

Nottinghamshire police’s fraud team had been made aware that bank cards were being retained at the Lloyds cash machine in Bracebridge Drive, Bilborough.

One of the victim subsequently had £500 withdrawn from his account.

Vasile Boidachi, of Hambledon Drive, Wollaton, was identified through CCTV enquiries.

He was arrested following the incidents in May 2020 and pleaded guilty to possessing an article for use in fraud. He was sentenced to ten months in prison at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday (29 July).

This comes just weeks after a man was jailed for stealing £23,000 by tampering with cash machines across Nottinghamshire.

Marius Raducun, 26, of Roseta Road, New Basford, pleaded guilty to theft, conspiracy to commit fraud, possession of articles to commit fraud and possession of a controlled class B drug. He was jailed for two years on 12 July.

Constable Phil Eddy, who led the investigation, said:  “It’s unbelievable that Boidachi tampered with a cash machine and thought he would get away with it.

“This is a great example of how we work alongside our partners in the financial sector in conducting a robust investigation, utilising the security methods the banks have in place, which has resulted in a positive outcome for several victims.

“It’s horrible to experience a crime like this where money has been wrongfully taken from your bank account.

“Thankfully, most of the money taken was recovered and the victims didn’t suffer any financial loss.”

People are asked to remain vigilant when using a cash machine by ensuring no one is standing directly behind them or looking over their shoulder.

If a card is retained by the machine, people are asked to contact their bank immediately so they can put a stop on the card.
