Lister Gate artwork pays tribute to Nottingham’s history

The new artwork is shown on the shop windows after you walk through the Broad Marsh walkway from Carrington Street into Lister Gate.

The work features the old cattle market, tramways, the xylophone man and the Walter Fountain with stories about the history of each of them.

Nottingham City Council said:

“It was agreed the pieces should depict history from the immediate surrounding area, including less well-known elements such as the cattle market and the Walter Fountain, as well as characters like the xylophone man who was synonymous with performances on Lister Gate.

“We commissioned Nathan Bainbridge and Ben Packer, who are artists with experience in producing large, high-quality art pieces, to create something eye-catching to brighten up the area.

“A lot of work is underway to improve this space as a gateway to the city, and these prominent empty units didn’t help to give people a good impression of the city on their way in.”
