Police tracked down a burglary suspect after jewellery stolen from the property was pawned at a nearby shop.
A gold ring and bracelet worth a combined £1,150 were taken from a house in Yorke Drive, Newark, on Friday (11 October).
The break-in took place at some point between 7am and 3pm, with an intruder letting themselves in through an already open door.
Officers attended soon after and later recovered the stolen jewellery, which was sold the same day as the burglary to a store in Carter Gate.
After reviewing CCTV, police identified someone they believed to be the intruder and conducted a series of arrest attempts over the coming days.
One of these was successful in the early hours of Tuesday (15 October), with officers visiting a property in Strawberry Hall Lane, just after 4.30am.
Following a short search of the address, they found a 28-year-old man hiding in a wardrobe, who matched the description of the person they were looking for.
He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary.
Sergeant Matt Burgess, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “The victim in this incident was understandably very upset about what happened, so we’re pleased to have been able to take the action we have.
“In addition to recovering the stolen jewellery, which the person responsible pawned at a nearby shop on the day of the offence, we have also managed to arrest a suspect.
“Nobody has the right to go into someone else’s home uninvited and take their belongings – burglary is an incredibly invasive crime that can really impact people’s wellbeing.
“We will always treat these types of offences with the upmost seriousness because of this fact and look to arrest anyone we suspect of being responsible.”
