Two suspected knife carriers have been arrested and drugs seized after a machete was swung at an officer on patrol.
Members of the knife crime team were conducting uniformed and plain clothes patrols in Radford, Nottingham, around 1.25pm on Monday (3 November) when they spotted two men behaving suspiciously.
As a marked police car approached the pair, at the junction of Oldknow Street and Birkin Avenue, they ran in different directions.
One suspect was pursued and detained nearby in Brushfield Street.
When officers carried out searches of the area they found a knife hidden underneath a car and cannabis in the suspect’s pockets.
The second man was chased on foot towards Alfreton Road. As he was being pursued, the man produced a sheathed machete from his waistband and struck the officer on the shoulder.
The suspect was detained a short time later in Ben Street. Officers found a significant number of wraps of cocaine during searches of the suspect and the machete was recovered from a back garden.
Two men, aged 19 and 20, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife in a public place and possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.
The 20-year-old was further arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent.
The 19-year-old was also held on suspicion of possession of a Class B drug and both suspects remain in custody.
Sergeant Matt Daley, of the knife crime team, said:
“The incident shows the dangers my team and other officers can face while patrolling to keep our streets safe.
“Thankfully, the officer was not seriously harmed, and he showed both composure and bravery throughout.
“The professionalism of the team has resulted in two weapons and a significant amount of Class A drugs being taken off the streets.
“The incident will now be further investigated by detectives.”
