Newark Conservatives back Kemi Badenoch’s decision to sack Robert Jenrick

Newark’s Conservative Association has confirmed its full backing for Kemi Badenoch’s decision to sack Robert Jenrick from the Shadow Cabinet, remove the party whip and suspend his party membership.

The group said in a statement:

‘This decisive action came after irrefutable evidence revealed Jenrick was plotting to defect, damaging the Shadow Cabinet and the Conservative Party.

‘The Leader of the Opposition took the only decision that any responsible leader could when faced with this evidence.

‘The British public are tired of political psychodrama. Disloyalty and dishonesty undermine trust in politics and it is disrespectful to our Conservative Party members, hardworking Councillors, MPs and – most of all – voters, who deserve better.

‘The Conservative Party is rebuilding with a serious team united around a shared purpose. Particular individuals’ decisions to walk away due to personal ambition tells you everything you need to know about them.’

‘The Conservatives are focused on delivering a stronger economy and stronger borders, and Jenrick’s behaviour will do nothing to distract us from our mission of renewal at the national level or here in Newark.’

The Chairman of Newark Conservatives, Cllr Keith Girling said: “Kemi Badenoch was absolutely right to take this decisive action when faced with irrefutable evidence that Robert Jenrick was plotting to defect in the most damaging way possible.

“Jenrick has let down his party, let down the activists who campaigned for him as a Conservative MP, and let down the voters of Newark who re-elected him in 2024.

“Newark Conservatives remain focused on exposing the disastrous failings of this Labour Government, holding to account Reform’s poor performance at County Hall and our hard working Conservative Councillors continue to work hard to deliver on the priorities of local residents in all communities across the Newark constituency. Anything else is a distraction.”
