Public consultation launched to turn quarry into nature reserve

Broxtowe Borough Council has launched a public consultation on plans to improve and formally protect a former quarry and landfill site in Bramcote following its adoption by the authority last year.

The council took ownership of the former BIFFA sand quarry and landfill site in July 2025. The area has since developed into a mix of young woodland, grassland and wildlife habitats located alongside an established residential community.

Funding has now been allocated to carry out improvement works aimed at increasing public access while enhancing the site’s environmental value. Proposed measures include upgrades to footpaths, improved entrance points, new signage, seating and picnic areas, alongside ecological enhancements and steps to protect sensitive habitats.

As part of the project, the council has begun the statutory process to designate the land as a Local Nature Reserve. If approved, the designation would provide long-term protection for wildlife while supporting opportunities for education, recreation and nature-based activities.

Residents are being asked to help shape the future of the site through a consultation seeking views on how the space is currently used, how accessible it is, and what priorities should guide future development.

The consultation also asks the public to suggest and vote on a new name for the site as it moves away from its former identity as Bramcote Quarry and becomes a publicly accessible nature space.

The consultation runs from 2 March to 31 March 2026. Residents can take part by completing an online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/bramcotequarry.
